    		<description>Relieving Stress During Exam Season

Dear Parents and Students,

I hope this finds you in good health and high spirits. With exam season just around the corner, I wanted to take this opportunity to address an important topic - managing stress. It is natural to feel some pressure during this period, but it's equally important to find ways to alleviate stress and maintain a healthy balance.

Firstly, let me assure you that as educators, we understand the challenges that come with exams. Our primary focus is not only on your academic success but also on your overall well-being. We believe that a calm and positive mindset is crucial for achieving your full potential during this time.

 3

By Jeanelle Greyling

Last Thursday, CIS Gorki celebrated a milestone by hosting the first inter-school STEAM event for international schools in Moscow.

More than 100 students (years 5 to 9) from international schools across Moscow joined our campus to collectively solve ecological problems using Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).

Mr. Christopher Kingshott, deputy head at CIS Gorki, said he involved other schools in this event, “because we are all part of a broader community of learners and educators striving for excellence”.

    		<description>The Inclusive Classroom teaching model

Inclusive classroom teaching is an approach to education that aims to include all students, regardless of their academic abilities or disabilities, in regular classrooms. Inclusive education is the practice where all children learn in schools in classes with children their own age. Inclusive education is one of today's educational &quot;hot&quot; topics, and there are a variety of positions on Inclusive Education. This is not simply about placing all students in classrooms without attending to their individual strengths, needs, and individual learning requirements. It does not demand that all students learn the same thing at the same time, in the same way. And it is definitely not the sole responsibility of the classroom teacher.

<description>SEND Students: Nurturing Inclusion and Success

SEND, or Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, students are an important and integral part of the education system. These students have unique needs and require specialized support and accommodations to thrive academically and socially. In this newsletter, we will explore the challenges faced by SEND students, the importance of inclusive education, and the strategies that can be implemented to ensure their success.

SEND students encompass a wide range of disabilities and learning difficulties, such as autism spectrum disorder, dyslexia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and physical disabilities. These students often face significant barriers to their education due to their disabilities. They may have difficulties with communication, social interaction, and learning at the same pace as their peers. These challenges can result in feelings of frustration, isolation, and low self-esteem.

<description>The Transformative Power of Drawing: Unlocking Difficult Concepts for Children

In the realm of education, finding effective techniques to help children grasp difficult concepts is crucial. One such technique, drawing, has emerged as a powerful tool that not only facilitates understanding but also aids in internalizing complex ideas. This article explores the importance of using drawing as a technique for children to understand and internalize difficult concepts.

Enhanced Comprehension: Drawing allows children to visually represent abstract or complex ideas, enabling them to comprehend these concepts more easily. By translating words into visual forms, children can engage with the material in a concrete manner. For instance, when learning about the solar system, drawing can help them visualize the position and order of planets, leading to a deeper understanding of celestial bodies.

Homework plays a crucial role in reinforcing classroom learning and developing important study skills. However, managing homework effectively can be a challenge for many students. Did you enjoy doing your homework? The answer is likely a ‘no’.

But, we all realise the relevance of homework in driving academic excellence besides infusing important life skills in students.

Yes, regardless of all the efforts to escape the rigours of homework and the teachers’ persistence to make the children complete theirs, homework does contribute significantly to the learning process. It develops in students the study skills, besides instilling work ethics early on. Solving problems independently and managing time to meet assignment deadlines boost the confidence of students.

<description>More able and talented young minds (MAT)

When dealing with more able and talented students teachers/lecturers need to be able to keep them busy and always thinking. They need to be challenged continuously and stimulated with every topic they do. If they are not challenged, they tend to get bored fast and lose interest in the class and eventually tend to be dropouts.

It’s my understanding that it’s not very easy to raise a child that is MAT. As a parent you watch as your child often does not fit into social groups along with the way they retaliate and act. Due to the fact that MAT students are on a different level to the others they tend to be teased by peers and if their lecturer does not know how to differentiate the child will suffer. As a parent of a MAT child, you will need to always look out for your child and make sure they are being stimulated not only in school but in all activities. An IQ of an MAT child starts at 145, the highest recorded is 228.” Marilyn Vos Savant was born in 1946 in Missouri. In 1986 the columnist and author made history when she was named in The Guinness Book of World Records as the person possessing the highest IQ, with a reported score of 228. She is said to have achieved the score on the Stanford-Binet test at the age of ten”.

Back to the Future of Education:

The Relevance of Classical Models

to Teaching Today.

To know is to be able to do - ancient African proverb

Dear Parents, Teachers, Students and Guardians,

I am writing to offer a perspective on how teachers could improve on a central part of the ‘teaching/learning’ process, in this case, examinations; but contrary to expectations, it is to the past that I direct our attention, and not to ‘recent advances’ in ‘mind-brain science’, or perhaps the latest from the techy world of AI. The internet contains more than enough on these subjects - and much of it, I dare say, of doubtful quality and relevance.

Message from the Head of School (Mr. Daniel Brace)

We have had another busy week in Gorki. A group of external teachers from our sister schools came to us to perform an inspection designed to highlight the strengths of our teaching as well as some areas for improvement. The feedback was very positive but has given us a number of areas to look at and develop. We are continuing our drive to improve, grow and develop and will ensure that this is maintained well into next academic year.

I am delighted to be meeting some representatives of our parent body on Monday afternoon with the CEO Mr. Ilnaz Mustafin. This will give us the opportunity to discuss the continuing development of the school, future plans (including new courses on offer) and the role our parents play in the continuing success of our campus.

We will continue improving the house system and are offering many ways for our teachers to recognise, support and reward students for attainment, progress, attitude to learning and personal development.

We welcome Mr. Georgy back to year 5 after an extended leave, it is great to see you back.

Please keep an eye open for our excursion paperwork, this will be coming out soon as transport is now easier with the change of season, and our talent program designed to highlight the extra curricula skills our students have ready for the end of year graduation performance.

Please remember to see Edupage front page for the newsletter as it contains information and feedback from sta

Message from the Head of School (Mr. Daniel Brace)

Thank you to Ms Yulia and the rest of the Russian curriculum team for a fantastic and entertaining Russian Celebration week. The students and staff had a great time exploring culture, education and their own social development. It was wonderful to see so many of our parents at the event and to be able to chat with many of you, I look forward to more discussions in the future.

Thank you to the Year 12 team from Skolkovo for coming in and delivering a talk with our year 11’s to help them decide their future routes within education at the CIS group of schools. The feedback has been really positive and I am hoping that many of our students will take advantage of staying within our system to get A levels or re-take GCSE’s as appropriate.

This week we have been finalising the options programmes for our KS3 students moving into KS4 and our KS4 into 5. The invitations will be with the relevant parents and students soon – please make every effort to attend as these sessions are reflective as well as informative.

There will be a series of interactive forms coming to parents, students and staff over the next month. These are anonymous ‘baseline’ surveys designed to enable out stakeholders to engage with the school to inform our planning and development. If you are a parent representative, or wish to be, please contact our admin team to arrange to meet with the leadership team and have your say.

This week our students have been completing their exams, progress tests and formative testing in class. These allow the teachers to determine the level each student is currently at and gives us the data we need to see the progress being made and where we should be targeting our efforts in class more effectively.

I would like to remind everyone at this point that ‘results’ only give a snapshot picture of attainment, knowledge, understanding and progress. These can all be improved upon with hard work, determination and communication.

Almost half way through the term already – it is flying past, soon it will be time for the next set of reports and for students tio show off their fantastic progress again. Exam results will be issued to our year 11’s this week – this is a reminder of the work that they still need to do to complete the IGCSE course successfully. The International exams will be sat this year starting at the end of May and going into June so there is still time for students to continue to improve or to concentrate on their exam technique – all of which we shall be helping with over the next term.

Despite being a challenging week we have been able to finish our year 11 mock exams and look forward to seeing all of our parents at one of the PTC evenings this week (30th and 1st), please see edupage for booking details. On friday we welcomed our secondary parents into classrooms to see our students learning in action, a huge thank you to the science, ICT, English and Maths teams for allowing us to join in with your fantastic lessons.

A kind reminder that we are still looking for ways to improve our communication with parents and are still trying to identify those parents who are willing to represent the parent body in meetings and at events to enable greater transparency in our decision-making processes. If you are willing to represent yourself and others, please let our administration team know.

Happy new year and welcome back. It is great to see so many smiling faces back at school after the winter break. This term is quite short but is very busy so students will need to be prepared to work hard and to do their best in the assessments and exams.

We will start the term with year 11 mock exams, checkpoint tests for year 6 &amp;amp; 9 as well as progress tests across the school in preparation for the end of term reports.

Two of our staff have yet to arrive due to visa issues over the winter break but they will return by the end of next week to ensure that our students have the best opportunity to shine throughout the coming term.

It has been a mixed week for us at Gorki this week. On one hand we had the opportunity to meet with parents across the school on Monday and Wednesday afterschool, enabling us to show how well our students are doing. We are able to welcome some more additions to the Gorki staff which will complete our staffing requirements allowing us to provide an even more effective experience for our students. On the other, we are saying goodbye to three more of our fantastic team – we wish them all the best in their future endeavors and thank them for all their help, support and professionalism over the years. We will miss you very much.

Message from the Head of School (Mr. Daniel Brace)

Wow, we have had dogs, dinosaurs and driving as our key moments this week.

As you have seen we are no longer able to use the gate opposite kindergarden as an access point to the school. This is to meet the requirement placed on us by the local authority in regard to parking , traffic obstruction and noise reduction for our neighbours. Please help us to meet these requirements by parking in the main car park by the tower, parent badges have been disables at the rear gate (by the lower building) so you will not be able to gain access anyway. If you have children in both schools we will be communicating with you on monday how you will be able to access the upper building through this gate. I will be there to help and assist where possible this week.

Message from the Head of School (Mr. Daniel Brace)

Yet another fantastic week in Gorki where we continue to go from strength to strength. The children have been engaged and challenged this week culminating in our anti-bullying session and a visit from the house dogs.

I finally got my snow, which was amazing, but now it comes with a plea – please ensure your children come to school suitably dressed and equipped for the snow and that they are made aware of their responsibilities regarding ‘joining in’ with snowball fights and snow angels. I must also remind parents that it may take a little longer to get to school now so please leave a little earlier so the students get to campus on time - I would hate to start sending students home for being incorrectly dressed or for being late too often.

Message from the Head of School (Mr. Daniel Brace)

Welcome back. It has been great to see most of you back at school this week. The snow that I was promised has yet to appear, but I am sure it will before long! In the meantime, please try to remember that the students really benefit from some outdoor time to burn off their excess energy, platy with their friends and hopefully gain new ones.

It will not be long until we will be showcasing some of our students amazing abilities with our “winter event’ - this is in the last week of term which ends on. The 16th of December, not before. Please remember that we are still catching up in many subjects as an after effect of the past 2 years disruption, so every day in school is important especially for our senior students.

Message from the Head of School (Mr. Daniel Brace)

A slightly wetter and windier week here at Gorky campus but there were still many opportunities for some excellent learning throughout the school, from ICT using models to Science “Cellular cakes” it has been very productive.

Mr Marius has been hard at work preparing the school football teams for our first ever inter-campus tournament, we are looking pretty good so far just don’t tell Skolkovo. Ms Amanda is also getting busy with preparations for our ‘Winter concert” event at the end of December, first call for auditions went out this week.

    		<link>https://cisgorki.edupage.org/news/?newid=176#news-176</link>
    		<description>Dear Parents / Guardians,

As we reach the end of the first term, and I thought it prudent to write to you and highlight some of the changes that have happened so far and to identify some that are still in development.

The school campus is undergoing a transformation to try and soften it, the hope is that by term 3 we will be able to make more use of the outdoor space and will be encouraging students and staff to make best use of all facilities in their learning journeys.

Students are being encouraged to be more accountable within the school for their attitude to learning and this will develop hand in hand with the rewards and sanction system which is a vital part of the students lifelong learning skills.

Message from the Head of School (Mr. Daniel Brace)

Almost the final newsletter of the term and I would like to thank everyone in our school community for their effort, hard work, support, commitment and dedication to the continual improvement of Gorki campus. It has been truly heartening to hear many positive comments from parents and stakeholders over the past few days and I hope these messages are also being received by our group and the students themselves.

There has been, and will continue to be, some landscaping work carried out to soften our school environment as well as efforts to try and improve activities for the students in and around the campuses.

Message from the Head of School (Mr. Daniel Brace)

At the end of yet another fantastic week in Gorki we find ourselves rapidly approaching the end of term assessments and progress report deadline. These will be completed by the 28th October ready for parents to access, through Edupage, over the end of term break.

It is important to recognise the amazing impact staff, that are unfortunately moving on, have had on their classes as well as taking the time to welcome our newest team members. All impacted classes will be notified as usual and we hope you will make the staff feel at home.

Message from the Head of School (Mr. Daniel Brace)

What a week! We have experienced the inter house debate competition with themes ranging from “social media makes us less social” to “Giving is better than receiving”. I must thank all of the students that took part, it was a fantastic event with some incredible energy and support from the onlookers. Tchaikovsky took the title but with strong performances from the rest I am not sure they will hold the title for long? Space week has also been a focus for learning this week with some amazing coding in computer science, fantastic design and research in Primary as well as some incredible art works in lower primary. The culmination is our joint assembly today featuring our very own ‘Mars Rover”. It promises to be a magnificent event - I hope the pictures do it justice. A huge thank you to Mr Cooper and Mr Curry for organising the events and to all the staff supporting, this will be the first of many special events and we can’t do them without you.

It was great to see so many of our parents, and school community, this week during our “meet the teacher” events. We were able to meet 30 parents allowing them the opportunity of providing us with valuable feedback as well as seeing their children's classes (and teachers) in action. There will be other opportunities to meet with the teachers and staff if you were unable to make it to this event. We will be sending the first terms events calendar home soon so please look out for this as it will have some important information on the events and activities our students, and wider school community, will be asked to be involved up to the winter break.

Message from the Head of School (Mr. Daniel Brace)

Second week in and already the students are starting to adapt to some of the new methods and expectations put upon them, well done to all of you that are embracing your role in developing your growth mindset and educational experience.

We are now at the part of the year where we need to begin to tighten up our rules to ensure that the school is an orderly and disciplined environment where our students feel safe and supported enough to engage with their teachers and classmates.

From Primary School:

Information letter from Mr. Paul, Head of Primary School

Dear parents and students,

We have reached the end of term 4, and the end of an eventful Gorki Spirit Week. A term filled with exciting events and experiences, and a week packed with variety and fun!

On Tuesday, we had another of our bake sales in the Upper Building, and in the Lower Building it was Silly Hair and Hat day. The next day was Dress as Your Friend Day, and Pyjama Day across the two buildings, whilst on Thursday everyone took part in Dress as a Job Day. The week concluded with Sports Day in both buildings. All of these events were conceived and partly organised by the Student Council, who wanted to promote the 'spirit' of our school, and end the term in a fun and positive fashion, and I am quite sure their hopes were fulfilled. It was lovely to see so many students engaged and happy in these different activities, whilst still working hard in their regular lessons.

From Primary School:

Information letter from Mr. Paul, Head of Primary School

Dear parents and students,

This week has been one of our most important weeks of the academic year - Book Week! The importance of Book Week is fairly straightforward - it greatly encourages students to simply enjoy reading, and reading reinforced many grammar and spelling rules that get taught during English and Literacy lessons. It is amazing how much we remember about language from just enjoying a good book.

During Book Week, there were a host of activities in both buildings, from Readathon challenges where a series of different teachers took it in turns to read the same book to the same class in relay fashion, to literary treasure hunts, and shared reading between different year groups, amongst many others. In addition, book sellers were in both buildings most days, and many students took advantage of the opportunity to purchase brand new books in either English or Russian. In Year 5, it was lovely to see some of the students having all bought the same book, and all reading it avidly together in form time.

From Primary School:

Information letter from Mr. Paul, Head of Primary School

Dear parents and students,

Last week was one of our busiest of the year, with excursions for all of Primary right across the week, and some Science Week activities too. Themed weeks and activities not just out of the classroom but out of the school itself are important and add variety and real life experience to support regular teaching and learning.

Our excursions took us to Oceanarium at Crocus City Mall. There, students were given a tour by an experienced guide, who explained lots of interesting facts about the fish and other animals that live at the Oceanarium. The students were particularly entertained by the seals, crocodiles, monkeys and flamingos - I was impressed that is was more than an aquarium but more of a zoo, and I would recommend it to anyone with children as a pleasant afternoon out.

Information letter from Mr. Paul, Head of Primary School

Dear parents and students,

A belated thank you to all the parents and other family members who attended our amazing Gorki's Got Talent extravaganza last Friday. The students pulled out all the stops to create fun, varied and dazzling performances of song, dance, musical compositions, drama pieces and even mime! It really did highlight that there is indeed a huge amount of talent here at Gorki! Enjoy some of the photographs from the day below.

Information letter from Mr. Paul, Head of Primary School

Dear parents and students,

Another busy week at CIS Gorki comes to an end, and our hardworking teachers and students can look back at more successful and productive lessons. As we edge towards Spring, and warmer weather, I'm hopeful that we can get students outside in lesson time for practical activities alongside the always-important classroom-based learning. Students enjoy a change of scenery, and doing things that are a bit different from more traditional education - learning about weather, temperature, nature etc is really enhanced by being able to see it in real life.
